Iowa Adventure Pass

Important News about Iowa Adventure Pass (posted November 23, 2024)

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Adventure Pass will not be available at Iowa libraries after 12/31/2024.
If you have a pass booked for a date after 12/31/2024, please print it out as soon as possible. Venues will honor these bookings, but the pass must be printed out prior to 12/31/2024 as there will be no access to passes after that date.
We know that Adventure Pass will be missed. This change impacts all Iowa libraries that provide access to Adventure Pass, and we all hope to offer Adventure Pass in the future. Solutions are being explored, but we do not currently have a timeline for when Adventure Pass will be available again.
Thank you for understanding. If you have any questions, please contact Mallory Snow at msnow@grinnelliowa.gov.

Free family fun with your library card! Passes available to Blank Park Zoo and Science Center of Iowa, with Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden coming soon. All of the information and guidelines can be found on the public pass page. Each pass is for free admission for two adults and two children.

Passes are available to residents of Grinnell, rural Poweshiek County, as well as the contracting cities of Kellogg, Oakland Acres, and Searsboro (as of July 1, 2024). Patrons residing outside these areas can with their local library.

One thousand books! It may sound like alot but you’ve got this. It doesn’t matter if your child is three years, three months, or just three days old – there’s no better time to start toward a goal of reading 1,000 books before they enter kindergarten than now!

Reading helps build social and emotional skills, sparks creativity and imagination, promotes bonding, and helps kids do well overall in school. Take that motivation, open one book, and get started. For the kids that want to read a certain book over and over again – don’t worry! You can count that book each time you read it. And remember, 1,000 is just a number. The goal is to work reading aloud together into your regular routine, and let the magic of stories do the rest.

Each time a child completes 100 books, they can celebrate their accomplishment by adding a pompom to their reading butterfly, which will be kept at the library. Children will earn a free book after 500 books and 1,000 books. They’ll get to mark their 1,000th book read by completing all the parts on their reading butterfly and place their hand print in acrylic paint on our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten wall. The program has no set start or end date – people can register and log the books read at any point.

Log your child’s reading at DCL Beanstack  or download the app to your mobile device.

StoryWalk @ Arbor Lake

The StoryWalk® at Arbor Lake is a way for kids and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors. Laminated picture book pages have been inserted into metal frames, which are installed along the paved east walking path at Arbor Lake beginning at the parking lot at Washington Avenue. The StoryWalk® will be updated with new stories every 6 to 8 weeks.

The StoryWalk® encourages readers to move their bodies while gaining early literacy skills. The story is a great way to introduce numbers and colors with vivid illustrations, and engage readers of all ages.

The StoryWalk® was funded by a grant from Greater Poweshiek County Foundation’s 2022 Community Fund Grants as well as a 5-2-1-0 Community Grant, part of Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative.

StoryWalks® have been installed in 50 states and 13 countries including, Germany, Canada, England, Bermuda, Russia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and South Korea. StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and has developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, formerly of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. For more visit www.kellogghubbard.org/storywalk.
