Accessibility Station

The new accessible workstation has features designed to accommodate users with varying needs. The workstation has a desk with adjustable height and an ergonomic chair, ensuring comfort and flexibility. Additionally, there is a large-print high-contrast keyboard and four input options: a larger mouse, a touchpad, a trackball, and a touchscreen monitor. A magnifier application is included to allow those with limited vision to enlarge portions of the screen as needed. For those who may be visually impaired or have a learning disability, a screen reader has been installed on the computer. A screen reader converts text and images to speech. The monitor includes a webcam and a headset with microphone.

The addition of an adaptive workstation with assistive technology is thanks to the SPARK Challenge through the Wilson Center for Innovation and Leadership at Grinnell College. The SPARK Community-Based Social Innovation Challenge facilitates collaboration between Grinnell organizations and students to tackle issues in the community. Community partners define their unique challenges, and student teams, selected by the Wilson SPARK Committee, work to develop innovative solutions through research and consultation.

This initiative embodies the collaborative spirit between Grinnell College students and the local community.  We extend our appreciation to Elisabeth Kille, Isabelle Kolleth, and Jiayi Chen for their dedication and creativity.

The accessible computer station marks a significant stride toward ensuring equal access to technology and information for all at Drake Community Library. This initiative is aligned with two of the library’s strategic focus areas over the next five years: “Inclusive Services and Access” and “Resource Access and Digital Empowerment,” and strengthening partnerships within the community.
