The Drake Community Library Board, library staff, and Friends of Drake Community Library, are saddened by the passing of George Drake. The library is named after George and Sue. The couple were instrumental in securing the funding for the library building at 930 Park Street in 2007. Their lead gift started the fundraising effort. George was an active volunteer on the committee that worked to raise over $7 million dollars for the new building. The time and talent during the capitol campaign by the Drakes made all the difference.
George was involved in many local initiatives. He was a member of the Grinnell Regional Medical Foundation, served on the board of the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation and performed with Shults & Co. Beyond Grinnell, the Drakes served as Peace Corps volunteers in Lesotho for several years in the early 1990s.
George’s contributions to the community and beyond have left an indelible mark on us all. Our thoughts are with his wife, Sue, and the Drake family at this time.
