Patient No More: People with Disabilities Securing Civil Rights

Discover a remarkable, overlooked moment in U.S. history when a courageous group of people occupied a government building and changed the nation. In 1977, four years after Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was passed to prohibit discrimination in federally funded programs, the law remained inactive due to one missing signature. Fed up with the delay, a diverse coalition of activists took bold action. More than 100 individuals staged a 26-day occupation of the Federal Building in San Francisco, leading to a victory that changed disability rights forever.

Patient No More brings this historic moment to life. Learn about the creativity and resilience of the occupiers, their strategic media influence, and the legal milestones of Section 504 and the ADA.

This exhibit presentation is made possible by Grinnell College and will end on October 27th. Patient No More is presented by the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University, made possible with support from California Humanities, and traveled by Exhibit Envoy.
