RAGBRAI, Renfrows & Free Cold Refreshments

RAGBRAI Day at DCL

“What’s that Crane?” might be something RAGBRAI riders wonder as they pass through Grinnell. Riders and anyone else interested is invited to stop by the library on July 27 to enjoy a free cold treat and learn a bit about Renfrow Hall (the crane!) and the story of Edith Renfrow Smith. Born and raised in Grinnell, Edith became the first Black woman to graduate from Grinnell College in 1937. Her family roots in Poweshiek County go back to 1859, when her grandfather George Craig travelled to freedom through Grinnell via the Underground Railroad. He was one of the freedom seekers travelling with John Brown when he stayed with J.B. Grinnell.

Team Renfrow is a group of students and community members diving into this history and that of other African Americans of early Grinnell. They will be present at the library from 10am-4pm that day to talk about the Renfrows, the wider history of African Americans in Grinnell, and other local history. They will offer free popsicles and cold drinks on the library patio and welcome everyone to enjoy the cool air and comfortable seats inside the library.
