Painted in 1933, Home of J.B. Grinnell is the work of Mary E. Milner Stoops, who lived in Grinnell for 41 years with her husband, J.D. Stoops, a professor of philosophy at Grinnell College. Born in Charlottetown, Canada, in 1856, she was remembered for her notable artistic talent and for painting works as gifts for friends.
J.B. Grinnell founded the town in 1854 with Homer Hamlin, Henry Hamilton, and Dr. Thomas Holyoke. A committed abolitionist and conductor on the Underground Railroad, he sheltered freedom seekers in his cellar at 814 Park Street. He also played a central role in establishing "Grinnell University" which later merged with Iowa College. Iowa College was relocated from Davenport at his urging to form today's Grinnell College.
